arrowAthletic Trainer, Andy Paulin Named 2009 NATA Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer

San Antonio, TX-The National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) has awarded Mt. SAC Athletic Trainer, Andy Paulin the 2009 Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. This award is given each year to a Certified Athletic Trainer who has given a lifelong dedication to the NATA and the field of athletic training on the national, district and local levels. Paulin has served for over 30 years in numerous capacities including supporting the Mt. SAC Athletic Program, teaching Athletic Training, serving as District 8 Director and serving on numerous national team medical staffs. In April of 2009, he was inducted into the NATA District 8 Hall of Fame for his outstanding and dedicated work in the field of Athletic Training.

arrowAllen Caveness Hired As Full-Time Professor and Head Men's Basketball Coach
June 24, 2009
Walnut, CA-Former Fullerton College Head Coach, Allen Caveness, has been named full-time Professor of Physical Education and Head Men's Basketball Coach. Caveness joins the Mounties after leading Fullerton College for the past two seasons as Head Coach. "We are excited to welcome Allen Caveness to the Mt. SAC Family. He is an extremely successful and proven Community College Coach and Professor," states Athletic Director, Deborah Blackmore.

Last season, he lead the Hornets to a 18-11 record, capturing his second consecutive Orange Empire Conference Championship and his fourth consecutive appearance in post season play. Prior to arriving at Fullerton, Caveness the 2008 Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year and 2007 South Coast Conference Coach of the Year, served as Head Coach at Compton College and Assistant Coach at Oxnard College and El Camino College.

arrowMt. SAC Athletics Captures Prestigious NATYCAA Cup!

Sacramento, CA-The Mt. SAC Athletics Program was named the 2008-09 NATYCAA Cup Champion which is presented by the National Alliance of Two Year Collegiate Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA). The award recognizes the premier overall community college athletic programs in the country. Mt. SAC finished the 08-09 year with 168.5 points, narrowly edging out conference rival, Cerritos College, by a half a point. In the six years of NATTYCA Cup existence, Mt. SAC has finished strong in the point standings each year, never finishing, lower than six place with 3 second, one fourth and one sixth place finish. This year the Mounties had strong post season finishes in Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Football, Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, Men's Wrestling, Women's Baskeball, Women's Softball (State Champions), Men's Track and Field, and Women's Track & Field. Sacramento, CA-The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) in association with the California Community College Sports Information Association, named Missy Mendoza of Mt. SAC, the CCCAA State Athlete of the Month for May. Mendoza led the Mounties to the 2009 State Softball Championship with her tremendous slugging which included 4 game winning home runs during the championship season. Mendoza nearly hit the homerun cycle with her game winning blasts which included a solo, two 3 run and one grandslam homerun which she accomplished in the State Championship Game. arrowMt. SAC Women's Softball Team Captures State Championship!

Salinas, CA-For the fourth time this decade, the Mt. SAC Women's Softball Team has captured the California Community College State Championship! Facing a tough uphill battle, the South's third seed proved that odd years are good for the Mounties and that seeds are just numbers. The Mounties faced the North #2 seed, Sacramento City College on Friday defeating them 12-6. Later that evening the Mounties surprised South number 1 seed, Cypress, 8-7. In the semi-final game on Saturday, the Mounties upset North number 1 seed, Siskiyous 4-3 and in the Sunday, Championship Game, the Mounties easily defeated North number 3 seed, Sierra College, 7-1 to capture the State Championship. arrowMountie Men's and Women's Track Finish Season Strong
May 18, 2009
San Mateo, CA-The Mt. SAC Men's and Women's Team completed another successful season, finishing in fourth place for men and fifth place for the women with 4 individual state champions. Favorites, Marcus Pope (400M Hurdles), Christine Cortez (1500M) and Lenoore Moreno (10,000 M) all dominated their respective events and captured California State Championships. The surprise of the day for the Mounties came in the Men's Pole Vault where sophomore Eric Adolphus upset a very strong field of pole vaulters to capture the championship. Adolphus bettered his personal best of 15 feet 8 inches twice, jumping 16'02"3/4 to beat a field that included 7 pole vaulters with personal bests above 16 feet. For Cortez this was her second consecutive state championship in the 1500M and she also placed second in the 800M. Moreno also competed in the 5,000M where she placed second. Mounties Off To The State Championships and Post Season
May 12, 2009
Walnut, CA - The Mt. SAC Mounties are on the trail of the State Championships and a possible Pepsi NATTYCA Cup (national award for overall athletic excellence at a community college) championship! This weekend the Mt. SAC Men's and Women's Track and Field Teams will travel to San Mateo, the Softball Team will head off to Salinas and the Men's Baseball Team will travel to San Diego for their respective State Championships/Play-Offs.

The Men's Track and Field Team coming off a 3rd place finish at the Southern California Championships is also favored to place in the top 3 at the State Championships while the women are capable of a top 5 finish. Men's Head Coach Doug Todd, the winningest Head Coach in Mt. SAC History with 12 state championships and numerous top 3 finishes, will be aiming to add another trophy to his collection.

The Women's Softball Team is competing in the State Championship for the 7 straight time and will face a tough challenge from local perennial powerhouses, Cypress (#2) and Cerritos (#2). Odd years seem to be the year of the Mountie as all three state championships have been won in odd numbered years ('07, '05, '03).

The Men's Baseball Team upset Cuesta College last week and now will move on to the Super Regionals to be held this weekend at Palomar College. The Mounties will first face number one ranked Palomar College this Friday at 12 noon in this double elimination tournament which will also include Santa Ana College and Long Beach City College.

Congratulations also goes out to the Mounties Swimming Program whose women placed 9th and men placed 11th overall in the state. Shane Hurter captured the individual state championship in the men's 200M backstroke. Angela Kanagowski captured the state championship in the 50M breastroke and set a new state record of 30.00 in the event during qualifying.

Former Mt. SAC Baseball Player and Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year, Danny Gans, Passes Away.

Las Vegas, NV - Former Mt. SAC Baseball Player, singer-impressionist and Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year, Danny Gans, passed away this morning in his sleep at his home in Las Vegas. Gans played for the Mounties under legendary baseball coach, Art Mazmanian.

After a severe injury in the Minor Leagues dashed his hopes of a major league baseball career, Gans took the entertainment world by storm. Through the years this "Man of Many Voices" performed to sold out performances at the Stratoshphere, Rio, Mirage and Encore as well as appearing in film (Bull Durham) and on television. A permanent performer at the Danny Gans Theater at the Mirage for 8 years, Gans was recently lured by his old boss, Steve Wynn, to a new theater at the Wynn Encore Hotel this past February. Gans was named Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year for 12 straight years with a reported salary of over 10 million dollars per year for his 4 nights a week act.
